S16 Slurry Ice System
Trial 1 – Monitoring of fish temperatures in bins containing both
liquid-ice and flake ice.
Fish handling
The haul of fish was emptied into the reception hopper. The crew
started handling the fish after the next haul had begun. Two crew
members were located on the upper deck, while two crew members were
permanently in the fishroom The fish were transported from the reception
hopper by a conveyor system. The fish were then gutted, either by hand
or machine. After a thorough washing the fish were then dropped into the
fishroom using another conveyor. The fish were graded into baskets in
the fishroom before being electronically weighed using Scanvaegt scales.
After weighing, the fish were placed in a bin. After 2 or 3 baskets of
fish the bins were iced thoroughly. This continued until the bin was
completely full. The same procedure was used for the fish stored with
liquid ice and the fish stored with flake ice.
Temperature checks were taken from fish stored in both liquid-ice and
flake ice at regular intervals. Both bins sampled were from the same
fishing operation. A thermocouple was placed into the fillet of a fish
and the fish was placed in the middle of a bin. The same procedure was
used for each bin. The ambient temperature of the fishroom was -0.7°C
Species: Small Haddock
Bin weights: Liquid-ice = 420kg, Flake ice = 420kg.
